About the book

A Case of Libel is a remarkable picture of a newspaper office - the office of a newspaper which, with the arrival of a new and ruthless editor, is in the process of changing over from "quality" to "mass"...And against this background a two-fold story is worked out - a two-fold story that is in fact one. There is a threatened action for libel, as seen by the journallists involved: and there is the enigmatic life of the woman libelled, and her relation, first with her husband, secondly with the liner steward who has killed himself with her photograph in his room, and finally with the newspaper's legal expert, who by a long process of careful intriuge manages to spend the week-end with her.
