Victor Demuth's efection to the East put a very embarrassing cat among the English political pigeons and was almost equally embarrassing to Colonel Russell's opposite number in Moscow. Harry Fletcher, the Prime Minister, was worried; very worried. He had called a snap election; if it were known that Demuth - a rich, ultra-left-wing dilettante M.P. - had defected, Fletcher would very soon have to change his address. And he knew it.
