When I started at Goldsboro Books, I was very confident in the fact that I would read any book and was not really limited to a specific genre. Although I still stand by this, since working here I have noticed that my preference sways more towards historical fiction. Anything set in a gothic setting, with a bit of mystery thrown in instantly gets me hooked!

The Puzzle Wood by Rosie Andrews

I loved The Levithan, Rosie Andrews’ first novel, so I could not wait to get my hands on this. Historical fiction, with a slice of crime, we see a young governess arrive at her posting on the Welsh-English border determined to learn the truth about the tragic fate of her predecessor.

Rosie Andrews plunges you into the mystery of the Puzzle Wood. Like the protagonist you too start to question everything, trying to figure out the truth. In a complex web of the past and future, surrounded in mystery, with dark gothic elements and with a potential murder to solve.. This is everything I ask for in a novel.

The Last Murder at the End of the World

In this ingenious dystopian thriller, with an omniscient narrator and an island full of secrets with what is left of the world, there is a murder. In order to save it, the murder must be solved…

If you haven't read any Stuart Turton, I urge you to stop what you are doing and go and read any of his books. I can always guarantee these are going to be a great read that keep me guessing to the very end. An extraordinary backdrop and a puzzle that had me questioning everything, his new novel The Last Murder at the End of the World lives is one of my favourite reads of the year so far!

Unfortunately, we are fully sold out of our edition of The Last Murder at the End of the World!

The Silence Factory by Bridget Collins

A tale of a man whose search for silence leads him into a world on the edge of time and magic. I was instantly drawn to this as soon as we received our copies at Goldsboro.

Secrets and silence, are all woven into a delightfully gothic web. Bridget Collins instantly grabs your attention with her masterful story telling. This is such a brilliantly conceived and complex novel.

You Are Here by David Nicholls

I have been a David Nicholls fan for some time, and after the new Netflix adaptation of One Day left me a little broken (if anybody else has watched this, you will know what I mean) I could not wait to get my hands on his new novel. I devoured You Are Here, on a rainy weekend in April.

Nicholls is simply brilliant at creating characters that you instantly connect with, I didn't really want the walk to end. It was funny, romantic, a little sad, but it was full of love and hope and that is how I felt when I finished this. I urge you to read this.

The Burial Plot by Elizabeth MacNeal

Set in 19th Century, London The Burial Plot is an unstoppable historical thriller about murder, manipulation, and a young woman trying to wrestle power from the hands of a dangerous man. But he’s always one step ahead ...

I really liked Elizabeth MacNeal’s previous novels; The Doll Factory and The Circus Wonders and this one did not disappoint. MacNeal is wonderful at creating an atmosphere that is dark, gothic and gripping from the very beginning. You become instantly emerged in the story. It is a perfect gothic thriller.

Titles I am looking forward to reading this year:

David Fennell – A Violent Heart

Constanza Casati- Babylonia

While I am aware my manager, Rebecca has already chosen this one. I too would urge anybody and everybody to read William when this comes out. I love Gothic fiction and have swayed towards horror on the odd occasion. This is on another level, I could not stop reading this book, even when I wanted to...
