Crime Collective: August 2026 Revealed

Why We Chose Split Second for August 2026

Sometimes the most gripping crime novels aren't built around impossible puzzles or serial killers lurking in the shadows. Instead, they ask a far more unsettling question: what happens when those entrusted to uphold the law find themselves at the centre of the investigation?

That’s why Split Second by R.C. Bridgestock became our August 2026 Crime Collective pick.

Inspired by the authors' decades of policing experience, Split Second is an authentic, emotionally charged police procedural that explores the split-second decisions capable of changing lives forever. When a firearms officer kills one suspect and fatally wounds another, the case appears destined to be quietly resolved. But as uncomfortable truths emerge and personal connections come to light, Detective Superintendent Jack Dylan and DI Charley Mann find themselves investigating a case where justice, loyalty and public scrutiny collide.

What immediately stood out to us was the novel's remarkable authenticity. Writing as R.C. Bridgestock, husband-and-wife duo Bob and Carol Bridgestock draw on many years of combined experience with West Yorkshire Police. Bob served for thirty years, rising to Detective Superintendent and Head of CID, where he led major crime and murder investigations, while Carol spent seventeen years in a range of operational and supervisory civilian roles, providing vital support to major investigations and bringing a unique understanding of the people and procedures behind policing. Together, they bring an authority to every page that few crime writers can match, creating a thriller where every interview, investigation and difficult decision feels authentic, believable and utterly compelling.

But authenticity alone doesn't make a great thriller. Split Second also delivers relentless pacing, morally complex characters and an investigation packed with twists, political pressure and impossible choices. It's the start of an exciting new series, introducing Dylan and Mann as a detective partnership we're certain readers will want to follow for many books to come.

If you enjoy intelligent police procedurals, character-driven investigations and crime fiction that balances heart-pounding suspense with genuine emotional weight, Split Second is one you won't want to miss.
