Recent Acquisitions: UK First Edition Books for Sale

We are pleased to present a recent group of acquisitions sourced by Goldsboro Books co-owner Daniel, featuring a carefully selected range of UK first edition books for sale, with a particular emphasis on condition, completeness, and collector appeal.

This latest selection includes a substantial run of Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey–Maturin novels, alongside notable twentieth-century literature, children’s classics, and theological works. All titles have been assessed with collectors in mind, with detailed condition notes provided throughout.

Patrick O’Brian – Aubrey–Maturin Series First Editions (HarperCollins)

A key highlight is a run of UK first edition, first printing volumes from Patrick O’Brian’s highly regarded Aubrey–Maturin series. These nautical historical novels, set during the Napoleonic Wars, remain a cornerstone of historical fiction collecting.

All volumes are published by Collins/HarperCollins, unsigned, and retain their original dust jackets unless otherwise stated (an important factor for collectors seeking first edition books for sale in collectible condition).

  • Post Captain (1972) – Very good; dust jacket with edge wear and one closed tear, not price clipped
  • The Fortune of War (1978) – Very good in very good, unclipped dust jacket
  • The Surgeon’s Mate (1980) – Very good in very good, unclipped dust jacket
  • Treason’s Harbour (1983) – Very good; slight fading, unclipped dust jacket
  • The Far Side of the World (1984) – Very good in very good, unclipped dust jacket
  • The Reverse of the Medal (1986) – Very good; light spine fading, unclipped dust jacket
  • The Thirteen-Gun Salute (1989) – Very good in a very good, unclipped dust jacket
  • Clarissa Oakes (1989) – Very good in a very good, unclipped dust jacket
  • The Wine-Dark Sea (1993) – Fine book in a very good, unclipped dust jacket
  • The Commodore (1994) – Fine book in a very good, unclipped dust jacket
  • The Yellow Admiral (1997) – Fine book in a very good, unclipped dust jacket
  • The Hundred Days (1998) – Fine book in a very good, unclipped dust jacket
  • Blue at the Mizzen (1999) – Fine book in a very good, unclipped dust jacket

This collection represents a cohesive mid-to-late series run, increasingly difficult to source in uniform condition, and particularly appealing to collectors seeking Patrick O’Brian first editions.

Christopher Zavisa – The Oddkins (1988 First Edition)

A distinctive entry in modern illustrated fiction, The Oddkins blends fantasy and darker narrative themes, contributing to its niche collector appeal.

  • Very good book in a very good, unclipped dust jacket

Such titles are of growing interest within the market for collectible first edition books, particularly where originality and illustration intersect.

A. A. Milne – Now We Are Six (1927 First Edition)

A cornerstone of twentieth-century children’s literature, Now We Are Six remains highly collectible, especially in early editions.

  • First edition in original red publisher’s cloth
  • Very good condition; no dust jacket
  • Light tanning and minor chipping to spine

Despite the absence of a dust jacket, early Milne titles in original cloth remain desirable within the rare book and first edition market.

Esther Freud – Peerless Flats (1993 Signed First Edition)

A signed debut novel offering insight into 1990s London, increasingly recognised within modern literary collecting.

  • Signed first edition
  • Very good book in very good, unclipped dust jacket

Signed copies such as this are a strong addition for those seeking modern debut first edition books.

C. S. Lewis – First Editions (Theology & Allegory)

A selection of first editions by C. S. Lewis, spanning theological reflection and allegorical fiction, continues to appeal to both collectors and readers.

Letters to Malcolm: Chiefly on Prayer (1964)

  •   Very good in very good, price-clipped dust jacket; minor chipping and small tear

Transposition and Other Addresses (1949)

  •   Fine in original printed wrapper; clean copy with previous owner inscription
  •   (Not issued in hardback in the UK)

The Great Divorce (1945)

  •   Fine book in very good, unclipped dust jacket; light chipping at spine ends

Early Lewis editions remain a consistent feature in the market for collectible UK first editions, particularly when retaining original wrappers or dust jackets.

Collecting Focus: Condition and Original Dust Jackets

Across these acquisitions, particular attention has been given to condition and the presence of original, unclipped dust jackets, both of which remain critical factors in determining value within the rare and first edition book market.

From fine copies to very good examples with light wear, this selection offers a range of options for collectors.
