First Edition. This is the true first printing of the first edition, one of approximately 1-2000 copies, distributed in Europe and Australia in early 1995 with a different binding and dust jacket that the first edition released in England in April 1995. John le Carre hated this jacket and the later UK edition had the silhouette walking through the open door on the jacket.

The books is in fair condition. There are two spots of wear at the bottom of the front cover, and the map printed inside the front cover bears the impressions of pencil marks, despite being erased. The binding is beginning to split where the title page meets the half-title page.

About the book

le Carre's post-Cold War masterpiece, filled with suspense, betrayal, desire and drama The Cold War is over and retired secret servant Tim Cranmer has been put out to pasture, spending his days making wine on his Somerset estate. But then he discovers that his former double agent Larry _- dreamer, dissolute, philanderer and disloyal friend - has vanished, along with Tim's mistress. As their trail takes him to the lawless wilds of Russia and the North Caucasus, he is forced to question everything he stood for. Set in a fragmented, uncertain post-Soviet world, le Carr's brutal story of falsehoods and betrayal shows men playing dangerous games beyond their control.
