About the book

Bradley Pearson, narrator and hero, is an elderly writer with a 'block'. Finding himself surrounded by predatory friends and relations - his ex-wife, her delinquent brother, a younger, deplorably successful writer, Arnold Baffin, Baffin's restless wife and engaging daughter - Bradley attempts to escape. His failure to do so and its aftermath lead to a violent climax and a most unexpected conclusion.

About the Author

Iris Murdoch

Dame Jean Irish Murdoch was an Irish and British novelist and philosopher.


Murdoch is best known for her novels about good and evil, sexual relationships, morality, and the power of the unconscious. Her first published novel, Under the Net, was selected in 1998 as one of Modern Library's 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.


In 1987, she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Her books include The Bell, A Severed Head, The Red and the Green, The Nice and the Good, The Black Prince, Henry and Cato, The Sea, The Sea, The Philosopher's Pupil, the Good Apprentice, The Book and the Brotherhood, The Message to the Planet and The Green Knight.


In 2008, The Times ranked Murdoch twelfth on a list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945".
