    London: The Hogarth Press 1932. First Edition / First printing. Publisher's orange cloth, titled in blue, in striking pictoral dustwrapper. Cloth is fine. Wrapper with minor rubbing to tips of spine else fine. A most attractive copy in the first issue binding.

About the book

The First World War is over. Eric Vernon is on the cusp of adulthood. Tall, bony and awkward he finds himself torn between a desire to emulate his heroic father, who led a life of quiet sacrifice, and resentment toward his father's roguish friend Edward Blake, who survived the war only to throw himself into gay life in Berlin. With subtle wit and trademark irony, Isherwood's second novel evokes a society in flux.

About the Author

Christopher Isherwood

Christopher Isherwood was an Anglo-American novelist, playwright, screenwriter, autobiographer, and diarist.


His best-known works include Goodbye to Berlin(1939), a semi-autobiographical novel which inspired the musical Cabaret; A Single Man (1964) adapted as a film by Tom Ford in 2009; and Christopher and His Kind (1976), a memoir which carried him into the heart of the Gay Liberation movement.
