Book Condition & Notes
A near-fine first edition in the original binding. There is some foxing to the flyleaves and there is a small amount of separation between the front cover and the book block. In a very good unclipped dust jacet, with some wear to the corners and a chip missing from the top of the back cover. There is a small tear to the fold between front cover and spine, and a very small chip missing from the bottom of the spine.
About the book
In a renovated Italian palace set above the blue of the sea, the Junoesque figure of Mrs Aldwinkle moves among her guests. These include a poet who earns his living editing The Rabbit Fancier's Gazette; a popular novelist who records every detail of her affair with another guest as future literary material; an aging philosopher who pursues a wealthy yet mentally-disabled heiress and a pair of na-ve and charming young lovers. Deliciously satirical, Those Barren Leaves bites the hands of those who dare to posture or feign sophistication and is as comically fresh today as when it was first published.

About the Author
Aldous Huxley
Aldous Leonard Huxley was born in 1894, in Godalming, Surrey.
He was an English novelist and critic gifted with an acute and far-ranging intelligence whose works are notable for their wit and pessimistic satire. He remains best known for one novel, Brave New World (1932), a model for much dystopian science fiction that followed.
The author’s lifelong preoccupation with the negative and positive impacts of science and technology on 20th-century life, expressed most forcefully in Brave New World but also in one of his last essays, written for Encyclopaedia Britannica's 1963 volume of The Great Ideas Today, about the conquest of space, make him one of the representative writers and intellectuals of that century.
