Book Condition & Notes
London Hodder & Stoughton 1938. First edition, first printing. Illustrated throughout with drawings and decorations by Bip Pares printed in black and orange. 8vo, publisher’s original orange cloth, lettered on the spine in gilt, in the original dustjacket printed in black and orange. 244pp. An unusually well preserved copy quite pleasing with just a bit of minor toning to the paper of the dustjacket spine, the cloth binding and gilt are still very bright and unfaded and near as pristine. FIRST EDITION, and a very nice copy of this copy of this follow-up to GOODBY MR. CHIPS. It contains a chapter of autobiography and a collection of Mr. Chip stories.
About the book
Mr. Chipping is a gentle, wonderful English schoolmaster known familiarly to three generations of schoolboys at Brookfield as Mr. Chips. In one of the most irresistible stories ever told, we find Mr. Chips taking a bride, and then, on a sad April Fool's Day, losing her; the little jokes his classes came to expect from a teacher they respected and cherished; the boy whose father sailed on the titanic; and the intrusion of WWI on the peace of Brookfiled. James Hilton wrote Mr. Chips in loving memory of his schoolmaster father, and in tribute to his profession.
